This leaves a prospective new owner a difficult choice: drive this high-performance pony car as it was meant to be, or maintain it in its nearly new condition? That ranks as a good problem for any Camaro lover to have. Camaro has always been aimed at the driving enthusiast, and in the mid-1990s, Chevrolet added the SS model as a step up from the sharply tuned Z28. The SS was something of a throwback to the days when dealers like Don Yenko and Bill Thomas would modify a factory-fresh Camaro for their speed-obsessed customers. When an order was placed for a ’97 SS, Chevrolet would ship a Z28 to SLP (Street Legal Performance) Engineering in Michigan, which added key performance upgrades. The already-potent 5.7L/285HP V-8 was fitted with a special air cleaner (and a raised fiberglass hood to clear the new intake) and a competition dual-exhaust system. SLP also added unique 17-inch five-spoke SS wheels, performance tires, a revised rear spoiler, new floor mats and a special car cover to protect the SS when not on the road. In the case of this SS, all those goodies were put into a Z painted Bright Red and equipped with glass T-tops. There’s a 4-speed Turbo-Hydramatic transmission behind the engine, its shifter rising from the console between the gray-leather-upholstered bucket seats. The instrument panel, revised for the 1997 model year, houses a full complement of gauges. Other interior amenities include a tilt steering column, cruise control, power windows and an AM/FM/CD stereo system. The owner’s manual for this meticulously maintained Camaro is included in the sale. |
